As employees adopt AI tools to accelerate their work, the risk of corporate data leakage increases. Entering confidential client info, source code, or proprietary data into public AI services can lead to major security issues.
Implementing standard data hygiene rules and technical boundaries allows your business to utilize AI safely.
1. Opt Out of Model Training
By default, many public AI tools (like free ChatGPT or Copilot tiers) use your prompts to train their public models. If you paste proprietary code or strategic plans, that data could be surfaced to external users. Always configure your business settings to opt out of data sharing and training.
2. Use Enterprise/Commercial Data Protection Tiers
Subscribe to commercial tiers that provide contractual data privacy. In Microsoft environments, users signed in with commercial accounts get Commercial Data Protection, meaning prompts are encrypted and not stored by the vendor.
3. Firewall Filtering & API Keys Management
We recommend blocking unauthorized public AI sites at your network firewall. Encourage employees to only use verified corporate AI endpoints. If your developers write custom software using AI APIs, secure the API keys behind strict access controls to prevent unauthorized request usage.
4. Establish Clear Internal Usage Policies
Provide guidelines on what data is safe for AI input. For example, summarizing public articles or generic text is safe; uploading proprietary client databases, SCADA architecture diagrams, or medical patient records is strictly prohibited without sandboxed private AI deployments.
